Chancellor Phil Dubois invites faculty, staff and students to the University Convocation in Cone University Center’s McKnight Hall at 9:30 AM on Thursday, August 16. Preceding the Convocation, a reception will be held for the campus community at 8:30 AM in the Lucas Room

The University Convocation is a chance for members of the campus community to hear about UNC Charlotte’s long-term goals and immediate plans and issues. Speakers include the President of the Staff Council and President of the Student Body. The Faculty President will present the faculty agenda for 2018-19. Also addressing the campus community will be Provost Joan Lorden and Chancellor Dubois, who will speak on the state of the University.

The University Convocation is a time to welcome new members of the faculty and professional staff and to recognize faculty members who have been granted permanent tenure as well as those who are beginning their 25th year of service to the University. The newest Bonnie E. Cone Early-Career Professor in Teaching will also be introduced.

A general faculty meeting in the form of a question-and-answer session will immediately follow the Convocation. All members of the campus community are welcome to remain for the meeting.

Mandatory Pre-Trip Meeting: ThursdayAugust 30, 5:00-7:00 PM

For first-year students only. Get connected to the UNC Charlotte community through an outdoor adventure.

We’ll travel to Hot Springs, NC on Saturday and spend time getting to know one another along the way. After camping along the Appalachian Trail on Saturday evening, we’ll whitewater raft on the French Broad River on Sunday.

Prepare to expand your comfort zone by connecting with a new group of people and experiencing an outdoor adventure.

Participants must register online for the trip by Wednesday, August 29, at 5:00 PM.

Please note that spaces on this trip are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Your registration is not complete until both steps are finished.

Pre-Trip Meeting Attendance Policy

Attendance at the pre-trip meeting is required.  Registered participants who miss the pre-trip meeting will be taken off the trip roster and are not guaranteed a refund.  Please keep this in mind when making decisions about participation.

The South Beyond 6,000 (SB6K) Challenge, organized by the Carolina Mountain Club, encourages hikers to scale the forty 6,000 foot peaks in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Those who complete the SB6K Challenge earn a patch as well as the satisfaction of having hiked the tallest mountains in the Southeast. Over the next few years, Venture Outdoor Leadership will travel to each of the peaks that our Commercial Use Permit allows us to access.

View the official rules about the SB6K program here.

Because of the elevation and the remote location of these mountains, participants should know these hikes are inherently strenuous physically, often present extreme weather and other hazards, and typically take 8 or more hours to complete. Beginners are welcome, just expect a challenging and rewarding day.

Registration is required by Wednesday, August 29, at 5:30 PM.

Please note that spaces on this trip are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Your registration is not complete until both steps are finished.

Pre-Trip Meeting: Tuesday, September 4, 5:00-8:00 PM

Learn how to not only paddle a sea kayak, but how to carry everything you need for the weekend in your boat. Depending on weather conditions and campsite availability, we’ll travel to Lake James in western North Carolina or Jake Jocassee in upstate South Carolina. We can’t go wrong with either — both locations have great views of the surrounding mountains.

We’ll paddle out to the campsite and spend time exploring the area on Saturday, and we’ll return on Sunday after a night of lakeside camping.

Registration is required by Tuesday, September 4, at 5:00 PM.

Please note that spaces on this trip are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.  Your registration is not complete until both steps are finished.

Pre-Trip Meeting: Wednesday, September 5, 5:00-6:30 PM

Registration for this trip is required.

Step outside your comfort zone and push yourself to explore a new environment. Worley’s Cave is a wild cave, meaning there are no artificial lights or paved walkways, and is located near Elizabethton, Tennessee.

Prepare to do plenty of scrambling and to get wet and muddy and to experience total darkness, hopefully see some Little Brown Bats and explore the subterranean passages and “rooms” as we travel a roughly 2-3 mile route through the cave.

Please note that spaces on this trip are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.  Your registration is not complete until both steps are finished.

Pre-Trip Meeting: None

Register online by Wednesday, September 12, at 5:00 PM.

With its striking dome, Pilot Mountain is an iconic mountain in our state.

We’ll be rock climbing on the roughly 50-100 foot tall cliffs adjacent to the dome, which overlook the North Carolina Piedmont. We’ll set up a number of climbs of different level of difficulty and encourage participants to set personal goals for the day and choose climbs that will challenge them mentally and physically. Participants will belay their peers under supervision of our trip leaders, so you’ll have the opportunity to build the trust and responsibility that comes from having another climber’s life in your hands.

Achieve your goals and exceed your own expectations on this day trip.

Please note that spaces on this trip are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.  Your registration is not complete until both steps are finished.
